An older man meditates with his palms together in a park, with a woman meditating behind him.

Short answer: Headspace is worth it if you’ll use it at least a few times a week and want structure: guided courses, sleep tools, SOS exercises for hard moments, and Ebb, an AI companion for reflection. At $69.99/year on the US App Store (about $5.83 a month), it’s priced in line with its main rivals. It’s less worth it if you only want occasional meditations, because Insight Timer’s free library covers that.

We checked Headspace’s official pages and US App Store listing on October 16, 2026. Headspace is a wellness app, not a replacement for professional care. If you’re in crisis in the US, call or text 988.

Headspace’s subscription page also links to student and family plans, and says the annual subscription renews automatically each year after the trial. When we checked, the page didn’t render the annual price for our region, so go by the price shown at checkout. The App Store listing doesn’t explain what Headspace Plus adds, and we didn’t find a plan comparison on the pages we checked.

Paying yearly saves a lot: twelve months at $12.99 is $155.88, versus $69.99 for the annual plan.

What you get

Meditation library. Headspace’s App Store listing says it has 500+ guided meditations, from 3-minute resets to longer sessions, organized into courses such as beginning meditation and calming everyday anxiety.

Sleep. Headspace describes Sleep by Headspace as a sleep app inside the main app, with guided sleep meditations, wind-downs, sleep music, soundscapes and sleepcasts, which are soothing audio stories. SOS exercises help you get back to sleep when you wake at night (Headspace sleep).

Focus and movement. Focus music, binaural beats and mindful movement sessions are listed too.

Human support (extra). Headspace sells therapy with licensed therapists and text-based mental health coaching. Its App Store listing says therapy sessions could cost as little as $0 through insurance partnerships; we didn’t verify coverage, so check with your insurer.

Ebb: Headspace’s AI companion

Ebb is the main reason Headspace appears on a site about AI tools. Headspace describes it as an empathetic AI companion that supports self-reflection and makes personalized recommendations from Headspace’s existing content, rather than generating new meditations (Headspace AI principles).

Headspace’s AI principles page also sets limits: Ebb isn’t a substitute for a licensed therapist or mental health coach, and it doesn’t provide medical or clinical advice. The page describes a multi-layered safety system for Ebb. If you want an AI that talks things through at length, a dedicated tool may suit you better (see alternatives below). If you want help choosing what to listen to when you’re stressed, Ebb fits that job.

Privacy

Headspace says it complies with HIPAA and GDPR, encrypts data, and publishes AI principles. The pages we checked don’t say whether your conversations with Ebb are used to train AI models, so we list that as unknown. If that matters to you, read the full privacy policy before sharing personal details with Ebb. Our AI journaling safety guide explains what to look for.

Who Headspace is worth it for

Worth it if you:

  • Want a guided path for learning meditation, not just a library.
  • Have trouble sleeping and like wind-downs and sleepcasts.
  • Want an AI companion and the option of human support in one app.
  • Will use it at least a few times a week on the annual plan.

Probably not worth it if you:

  • Meditate occasionally and are happy with free content.
  • Mainly want narrated bedtime stories, where Calm is better known.
  • Want an AI to talk through problems at length.

If you want an AI to talk to more than a meditation library, look at Wysa, which offers a free, anonymous AI chat with CBT-style exercises, or Ash, an AI built for mental health support ($19.99/month or $169.99/year on the US App Store). Both are wellness tools, not therapy. See Wysa vs Ash.

How to test it properly

  1. Start the 14-day trial and put a reminder in your calendar two days before it ends.
  2. Pick one course (beginning meditation or a sleep course) rather than browsing.
  3. Try Ebb twice: once when stressed and once when planning your week, to see if its suggestions help.
  4. Count your sessions. If you only opened it a handful of times in two weeks, a free option like Insight Timer is probably enough.
